New: Recommended Reading lists now online

Reading for pleasure brings with it a number of benefits to children and adults alike, and encouraging this is important here at Caldew. We have a wide range of fiction available in the library to suit all tastes and ages of our students, and you can now access some of our top recommendations online. The service is provided free by a website called Lovereading4schools.co.uk and in addition to being available in the school library, all the books are available to buy at a 25% discount. Uniquely, schools and parents can download a free Opening Extract of each book to find out which their children will most enjoy before buying. And for every £100 spent by parents of our school we are given a £5 book voucher to purchase more books for our school library, benefiting your child even further.

You will be asked to register as a parent and create your own account. It’s free and easy to do. All you need is an email address and a password that you can remember.

Once you have registered you will need to LOGIN each time you visit the school reading lists.

BBC Young Writers Award

Attention all young writers aged 14 – 18!  The BBC Young Writers award is now open for entries. Your writing must be a piece of original fiction, on any topic, of NO MORE THAN 1000 words. The deadline for entries is Monday 19 March 2018.  The five shortlisted entries will be invited to the award ceremony, have an exclusive tour around Cambridge University to meet and chat to a number of  high profile authors, publishers and agents. The winner will have their story recorded by a professional actor and broadcast by the BBC, as well as winning a personalised mentoring session with an adult author.  This is a brilliant opportunity, so get writing.  For more details, see the link on the News section of eLibrary, or speak to Mrs Bell.

New Look Library

The library was given a whole new look to create a vibrant, friendly and purposeful space for students to study, read, browse and research. The new Code of Conduct in place means that 6th Formers are able to use the space for silent study during whilst off-timetable, and the whole school have a welcoming space with plenty of room for completing homework, choosing reading material or relaxing with quiet board games during breaks.

Leaders have made significant progress in improving the school since the previous inspection. They have focused on creating a broad and ambitious curriculum which meets the needs of pupils and students, including those with special educational needs and /or disabilities (SEND).

Leaders provide effective careers guidance to pupils from Year 7 through to Year 13. Clear guidance, including preparation for interviews and ‘Work Ready Days’, helps pupils and students to make considered choices for their next steps.

Pupils including students in the sixth form, are proud to attend Caldew School. They feel well supported, happy and safe in this welcoming community. There are high level of trust and respect between pupils, students and staff.
